What symptoms should I watch for? How should I test my vision?
The Amsler Grid Test is one of the simplest and most effective methods for patients to monitor the health of their macula. The Amsler grid consists of a square grid with a dark dot in the middle. Broken or distorted lines or a blurred or missing area of vision could be one of the first signs of age-related macular degeneration. The grid also helps to monitor changes in vision once changes have been detected or treatment initiated.
- Read your reading glasses if you use one
- Keep the chart at a reading distance (about 33 cm)
- Check only one eye at a time. Cover one eye, and then focus on the dot in the center.
-
Look for a change from your usual baseline!
- Do any of the lines look wavy, blurred or distorted?
- Are there any missing areas or dark areas in the grid?
- Can you see all corners and sides of the grid?
- Repeat with the other eye.
VERY IMPORTANT: Report any irregularity to your eye doctor immediately.
