What treatment options are available for Dry AMD?

Many treatment options for dry AMD are in the experimental phase. There are many research endeavors underway in understanding the mechanism of AMD which can in turn, present opportunities for treatment. These include investigations on the role of nutrition, genetics, light exposure and other environmental issues.

This is particularly important in cases of dry AMD as there are no treatments currently available and most of the people with AMD have the dry type.  If you are at high risk for developing advanced AMD, you should consider taking the combination of nutrients used in the AREDS study such as MacuSave. It has been proven by the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) conducted by National Eye Institute (NEI) that high levels of antioxidants and zinc significantly reduced the risk of progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by about 25% in patients most at risk for age-related vision loss.

In July 2010, the FDA approved the use of a miniature, implanted device that magnifies images onto the retina to improve central vision damaged by AMD.
