What is the AREDS? The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) is a major clinical trial sponsored by the National Eye Institute (NEI), one of the federal government's National Institutes of Health (NIH). This study had two objectives. One, to learn more about the natural history and risk factors of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts. Secondly, to evaluate the effect of high doses of antioxidants and zinc (such as MacuSave) on the progression of AMD and cataracts. Results from the AREDS showed that high levels of antioxidants and zinc significantly reduce the risk of advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and its associated vision loss. This finding is of great public health importance, since the incidence of AMD is expected to triple by the year 2025. Treatment of at-risk patients with the AREDS formulation such as MacuSave is now considered standard of care

What is “AREDS-2”?
Researchers with the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) reported in 2001 that a nutritional supplement called the AREDS formulation can reduce the risk of developing advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The original AREDS formulation contains vitamin C, vitamin E, beta-carotene, zinc and copper.
In 2006, the same research group, which is based at NIH's National Eye Institute, began a second study called AREDS2 to determine if they could improve the AREDS formulation. They tried adding omega-3 fatty acids, as well as the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which are in the same family of nutrients as beta-carotene. The researchers also tried substituting lutein and zeaxanthin for beta-carotene, which prior studies had associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers. The study found that while omega-3 fatty acids had no effect on the formulation, lutein and zeaxanthin together appeared to be a safe and effective alternative to beta-carotene.
Can a Daily Multivitamin Alone Provide the Same High Levels of Antioxidants and Zinc as MacuSave? No. MacuSave levels of antioxidants and zinc are considerably higher than the amounts in any daily multivitamin. These levels are based on recommendation by AREDS formulation's. Can Diet Alone Provide the Same High Levels of Antioxidants and Zinc as MacuSave? No. The high levels of vitamins and minerals are difficult to achieve from diet alone. However, based on studies it is always recommend that patients who have been diagnosed with Macular Degeneration to have diets rich in green, leafy vegetables so that they have a lower risk of progression of AMD. What About Lutein and Zeaxanthin? Lutein is a carotenoid found in dark leafy green vegetables. Carotenoids are concentrated in the macula, the part of the eye responsible for central vision. Studies suggest that Lutein plays an essential role in maintaining healthy central vision by protecting against free radical damage and filtering blue light.
